What Do We Do Now is the fifth solo album recorded by J Mascis since 1996. It's not a very aggressive release schedule, but considering the live albums, guest appearances, and recordings made with his various other bands (Dinosaur Jr., The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, etc.), to paraphrase Lou Reed, "J's week beats your year." What Do We Do Now began to take shape during the final days of the pandemic. Using his own Bisquiteen Studio, J Mascis started writing a series of acoustic tracks with a different dynamic than what he creates for Dinosaur Jr. Two musicians are featured on the album. Ken Mauri (from the B52s) plays piano on several tracks. The other guest musician is Matthew "Doc" Dunn on steel guitar. Dunn manages to expand and soften the musical contours, giving it a fully classic profile. Both Dunn and Mauri make beautiful contributions to the songs on this album, helping them transform from acoustic sketches into powerful ballads.
