Released in 1962, Takin' Off is, after his stint alongside Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock's first album as a front man. The young keyboard prodigy delivers with this album one of the cornerstones of Hard Bop Jazz and quickly catches Miles's attention, who will make the pianist part of his second quintet. Accompanied among others by Ferddie Hubbard on trumpet and Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, Herbie Hancock delivers a true gem and immediately establishes his Watermelon Man, which would remain one of the greatest tracks in Jazz. This LP reissue should find a place of choice in the record collection of aesthetes and allow as many people as possible to come close to perfection.
