Takin' Off was the first album recorded under his own name by pianist Herbie Hancock. All the compositions are by the leader, who is accompanied here by stars such as Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins. The album features one of Hancock's most famous tracks, "Watermelon Man," which reached the Top 100 of the pop charts. The title would become a jazz standard after being covered notably by Mongo Santamaría. Presented on crystal clear 180 g vinyl in a limited edition, this version offers the complete album enhanced with two bonus tracks.
