Before joining Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, Herbie Hancock had the opportunity to make a name for himself by releasing his very first album, Takin' Off, in 1962 (he was just 22 years old at the time), which is often considered one of the best debut albums by jazz artists. This is particularly due to the iconic track featured on it, which has become one of the most covered standards: Watermelon Man. It is true that for his debut, Herbie surrounded himself with top musicians, starting with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone. However, this does not prevent him from showcasing his own talents and creativity. Excerpt from the ideal Fnac discography 2017.
