Giving the World Away, Hatchie’s second album, is the best introduction to the work of Harriette Pilbeam, the Australian songwriter and musician behind the project. Produced by Jorge Elbrecht (Sky Ferreira, Japanese Breakfast, Wild Nothing), Giving the World Away is Hatchie’s brightest and most important work to date. Made with the help of Joe Agius, Hatchie’s longtime collaborator, this new album revisits the celestial shoegaze dear to her and blends it with the pop sensibilities found on her previous releases, but with the volume knob turned all the way up. Built around the drums of Beach House drummer James Barone, Giving The World Away is sonically rich and structurally musical, with traces of 90s trip-hop and acid house influences. Harriette had initially planned for these songs to head in a more energetic direction; she had envisioned her concerts turning into a big dance party, but things turned out differently. Between Covid and successive lockdowns, she ultimately withdrew into herself. This introspection and self-discovery served as the true inspiration for the record. On Giving the World Away, she returns again and again to the theme of dismantling internalized shame, of seeking gratitude and stability, and of being able to trust herself. Incisive and profound, it is an album about self-confidence, about that strange period that is young adulthood, that moment when you finally begin to clearly know who you are.
