Hatchie's second album, *Giving the World Away*, is the best introduction to the work of Harriette Pilbeam, the Australian author, composer, and musician behind the project. Produced by Jorge Elbrecht (Sky Ferreira, Japanese Breakfast, Wild Nothing), *Giving the World Away* is Hatchie's most vibrant and important work to date. Created with the help of long-time Hatchie collaborator Joe Agius, this new album takes her beloved celestial shoegaze and blends it with the pop sensibilities found on her previous releases, but with the volume knob turned all the way up. Built with the percussion of Beach House drummer James Barone, *Giving The World Away* boasts a rich sound and structured musicality, with traces of 90s trip-hop and acid house influences. Harriette initially intended these songs to go in a more energetic direction; she had a vision of her concerts turning into a big dance party, but it turned out differently. Between COVID and successive lockdowns, she ultimately turned inward. This introspection and self-discovery served as genuine inspiration for the record. On *Giving the World Away*, she repeatedly returns to the themes of dismantling internalized shame, seeking gratitude and stability, and learning to trust oneself. Incisive and profound, it's an album about self-confidence, about that strange period of young adulthood, that moment when you finally begin to clearly know who you are.
