Gravenhurst is the work of Bristol-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Nick Talbot. *The Ghost In Daylight* is his most varied work to date, with relaxing acoustic songs mixed with dense pieces built from mellotrons, Optigan organs, and vintage synthesizers. The first track, "The Prize", is a dark meditation on Gravenhurst's recurring themes: compulsion, degradation, and the possibility of transcendence. But this menacing atmosphere is counterbalanced by a sublime vocal melody, soaring harmonies, and majestic strings. "Up until now I had avoided using string sections because they seemed to be a bit of an easy shortcut to emotionally manipulate the listener. 'It's a sad song, use a cello.' It can end up sounding pompous instead of epic. With 'The Prize', I feel like I've written something that takes that feeling away from me." Over six astounding albums, Nick Talbot has developed and maintained a unique identity across multiple genres. "I like the idea that listening to Gravenhurst is more of an active experience than a passive one. The songs offer clues and form a map of a place partly given and partly open for the listener to construct what they wish."
