The Tricky Sessions - Trident Studios (Radio Broadcast 1975/1980)
Description
Starting from nothing in the late sixties, Genesis quickly established itself as one of the most creative groups in British progressive rock. A series of increasingly bold albums, combined with Peter Gabriel's stage presence, propelled the band from the status of a niche curiosity to an international phenomenon. Yet, at the end of the massive tour for *The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway* (1974), Gabriel's departure cast doubt: was Genesis's story coming to an end? Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins, and Steve Hackett then chose to continue the adventure as a four-piece. Retreating to compose what would become their seventh studio album, *A Trick of the Tail* (1976), they created a multitude of new pieces without knowing precisely who would handle the vocals. Auditions poured in, but it was only after some hesitation that Phil Collins offered to record a vocal demo for "Squonk." This performance proved decisive, and he quickly found himself singing for the rest of the album. The recordings gathered here capture the uncertainty and enthusiasm of those early days. When the band entered Trident Studios in October, the identity of their singer remained uncertain, and many performances were recorded as instrumental pieces or sketches awaiting a voice. The result is a fascinating testament to Genesis's work, from early rehearsals to constantly evolving arrangements, including alternate takes that shed light on the genesis of these much-loved songs.
