Dummy is a rock band from Los Angeles whose debut album Mandatory Enjoyment, released in 2021, received praise from Pitchfork, Stereogum, and many others. The band spent two years on tour, and it is this transformative experience that shines through in their second album Free Energy. Dummy wanted to become harder, more danceable, and more psychedelic for their next album. It was about applying the exploratory potential of electronic textures to the elemental qualities of rock, meaning creating more vocal loops, samples, having crazier rhythms and playful synths, making more music. The result is a record that celebrates the ability of music to make the body move, whether through an MBV-esque wall of noise, a catchy pop chorus, or a joyful drum machine - or, if you're Dummy, perhaps all these elements in the same song. Free Energy also features saxophonist and electroacoustic artist Cole Pulice (Moon Glyph) and Jen Powers from the duo Powers / Rolin. For fans of Seefeel, Water From Your Eyes, Cindy Lee, Can, Lewsberg, Aphex Twin, Portishead, Mandy Indiana, and Stereolab, Vanishing Twin.
