Dexter Gordon (1923 - 1990) was a giant in every sense. His stature and his playing were imbued with authority. He had the power to draw conclusions from numerous musical impressions and, without caring about the perceptions of his contemporaries, played things as they were. He was one of the first tenor saxophonists to play modern jazz after the big bands, making him a source of inspiration for many. On July 15, 1979, he joined North Sea Jazz with his trio of musicians consisting of pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Eddie Gladden. On this album, you can hear their interpretations of "It's You Or No One" and "More Than You Know." Additionally, the album contains a recording of the tenor battle that took place later that evening during "Flying Home" with Hank Jones on piano, Gene Ramsey on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums, as well as Dexter Budd Johnson, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb, and Buddy Tate on saxophone. Following the Ella Fitzgerald album, this is the second release in the North Sea Jazz Concert Series presented late last year by Bertus Distribution, in collaboration with NTR, AVROTROS, and MOJO. This is a new series of vinyl records consisting of live recordings of legendary artists over the decades, made at the famous North Sea Jazz Festival. The North Sea Jazz Concert Series consists of officially licensed records released on standard 180-gram white vinyl in a thick cardboard sleeve printed on reverse board. The records will be primarily illustrated in black and white by Hans Pol, in the festival's characteristic style, drawing inspiration from the covers of old jazz records from the Blue Note label, for example. Jazz journalist and expert Jeroen de Valk wrote the texts for the sleeves. This is the very first vinyl edition of all the recordings!
