For a good part of the past decade, Death Valley Girls has used their music as a means to tap into a shared cosmic energy. On their albums Glow In The Dark (2016), Darkness Rains (2018), and Under the Spell of Joy (2020), the band tackled the banality of modern society and celebrated the "infinite magical potential" through a collage of explosive proto-punk riffs, unstoppable melodies, and whimsical lyrics. But on their latest album Islands in the Sky, Bonnie Bloomgarden, the leader, uses the band's anthems as a guide for spiritual healing and a roadmap for future incarnations of the self. The resulting music is by far the most contagious and festive of Death Valley Girls to date. At its core, Islands in the Sky is a party - a celebration of life, love, and mystery, exhilarating, danceable, and singable. Most of the album was channeled when Bloomgarden and drummer Rikki Styxx went to a cabin in the California woods on New Year's Day 2022 to tap into songs from the ether. Supported by Larry Schemel's guitar prowess and the arrival of new bassist and singer Sammy Westervelt, Death Valley Girls set out to create their most ambitious and exciting album to date at Station House Studio in Echo Park.
