He has written songs for the critically acclaimed Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Daniel Rossen shares a brand new collection of songs on his first solo release, Silent Hour/Golden Mile. Productions from a musician you already know, but which reveal a heart you might not have suspected. Rossen recorded almost all of Silent Hour/Golden Mile by himself in rehearsal rooms and small spaces in New York. From the sighing strings and surging percussion of the opening track "Up on High" to the guitar mosaics and one-man choir of "Return to Form," Rossen was both instigator and performer. However, he did enlist the guitar of Scott Hirsch and the horn arrangements of Ian Davis and Kris Nolte; for the propulsive drums on the last track, credit goes to Eric Slick (Dr. Dog). Appropriately, the EP's name comes from its final track, "Golden Mile," a gem that tempers its lyrical sadness with excellent rhythms and haunting guitars. "For a Silent Hour, for a Golden Mile," sings Rossen, immediately shifting from past difficulties to the infinite and unknown future. "There's bliss in this mess. There's madness all around."
