Cranes is a dream pop/shoegaze group formed by siblings Alison and Jim Shaw, who rose to fame after a world tour with The Cure in 1992. Following the closure of the influential label Dedicated in 1998, they took a two-year break before founding their own label, Dadaphonic. They released three studio albums there between 2001 and 2008, of which this self-titled album is the last.Like their other albums on Dadaphonic, Cranes explores the more subtle side of the group, fueled by their penchant for electronic music. Shimmering synthesizer arpeggios and ambient strings blend with the band's characteristic drums and guitars, while preserving Alison Shaw's childlike voice, so essential to their sound. The result is a vintage-sounding Cranes album, capable of winning over longtime fans as well as attracting new ones.
