Another Country

Another Country is the fifth full album by Cindy, the San Francisco-based band built around the songwriting of Karina Gill. Recorded, like all its predecessors, in their hometown and with a consistent lineup inherited from their previous album (the EP Le Lac des cygnes from 2024), it is filled with poetry of private landscapes, dramas overheard at doorways, and confused winds. These are classic concerns of Cindy, and yet, as always, they contain a new mystery and charm that give the impression of discreet revelations each time. Another Country is both opaque in its intentions and specific in its presentation, and as such presents the kind of truth that keeps the listener searching for answers just out of reach. "The title of this album, Another Country, refers to the novel by James Baldwin of the same name. The book has a kind of drama that makes sense to me. When I look around, the obvious explanations are not enough. The fog of feelings and ideas meant to explain all of this, no. Baldwin goes beyond that towards desires that begin to explain themselves. The songs of Cindy emerge from the X-rays that my particular brain creates from what I see and feel. What you hear on this album is the result of a collaboration with the members of Cindy that transforms this shaded thing into full color, fully developed. Each of them, in music, is confident and unblinking, and making this record together made me feel like saying: yes, yes, you see what I mean." Cindy is Karina, Staizsh, Will, and Oli.
