Nine Track Mind is the debut studio album by American singer Charlie Puth. It was released on January 29, 2016. The album's lead single, "Marvin Gaye," featuring Meghan Trainor, was originally released as the sole single from Some Type of Love on February 10, 2015, and peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, while topping the charts in various countries, including France, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. After New Jersey-born singer Charlie Puth went viral in the early 2010s by uploading performance videos to YouTube—notably a cover of Adele's "Someone Like You"—his rise to fame was positively stratospheric. Thanks to the release of Puth's duet with Meghan Trainor on the song "Marvin Gaye," and a featured long play on Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again" in 2015, the pop singer tentatively began preparing his debut album, Nine Track Mind, at Atlantic Studios, in Los Angeles, California. This is the story of how Charlie Puth embarked on a solo mission to bring retro-pop back from the brink. Having already built a strong social media following through his experience as a YouTube personality and a live TV appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Charlie Puth gave fans a taste of what to expect from his debut album when he released his lead single, "Marvin Gaye," in February 2015. A duet with "All About That Bass" singer Meghan Trainor, this well-intentioned throwback to doo-wop-inspired soul music couldn't have gotten Puth's career off to a better start, peaking at No. 1 in the UK and No. 21 in the US. "I was listening to a lot of Marvin Gaye records and Motown," Puth explained about the song's retro inspiration. "When I was making my record, I just wanted to make that soulful sound." With playful lyrics that tipped their hat to Gaye's steamy 1973 hit "Let's Get It On" as well as Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," its brilliant contemporary pop production values indicated how, with Nine Track Mind, Puth would put a new spin on the vintage soul sounds of the past. The first album for the young singer, only 23 years old, Charlie Puth grew up in New Jersey, quickly gaining notice after starting on social media. He began by publishing covers on his YouTube channel, notably covering songs by Adele and the band Lady Antebellum. He signed with Atlantic Records and topped charts worldwide with "Marvin Gaye," his new single, a duet with Meghan Trainor (the singer of the hit "All About That Bass").
