For its second series of reissues from the legendary Texan rock band Butthole Surfers' catalog, the Matador label focuses on the 1984-1991 period. In 1988, Butthole Surfers released 'Hairway to Steven,' an epic ranging from the saturated guitar excesses of 'Jimi' to the sweetness of the haunting acoustic 'I Saw An X-Ray of a Girl Passing Gas,' all while including the Fugs-esque vociferations of 'John E. Smokes.' Despite all its strangeness, the album stood out to traditional media and symbolized a first step in the band's ascent toward commercial success.
