Bush Tetras have been making punk music for over four decades. With flashes of reggae, bursts of noise, and snapping guitars, they emerged from a gutter behind the CBGB club in New York. Over the years, they have repeatedly reinvented themselves, altering their sound and refining their vision while remaining unique and essential. In the late 2010s, the band, consisting of Pat Place, Cynthia Sley, and Dee Pop, reformed. In 2021, as the band began working on a new album, beloved drummer Dee Pop suddenly passed away. Determined to finish the album in his memory, the Tetras entered the studio to complete what they had started when the time was right. They enlisted a new drummer, Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth, who also took on the role of producer for this album, They Live in My Head. The band's third official album (a misleading fact when viewed alongside such a vast and influential discography), it is a collection of songs that reflect both the past and today's reality. From "Ghosts of People," where Pat Place's legendary guitar weaves through closed doors, to the fiery "2020 Vision," a call to hit the streets and make things happen, the album addresses the new and the old in both abstract and specific terms. But whether looking forward or backward, Bush Tetras have always been a political band, one that speaks out against all sorts of issues. And in this sense, They Live in My Head is no exception at all.
