Released in 2009 between Tender Buttons and Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age, Mother Is the Milky Way reveals a more contemplative side of Broadcast. Around Trish Keenan and James Cargill, the band partially abandons motorik rhythms to favor stripped-down arrangements where acoustic guitars, organs, mellotron, flutes, and electronic textures blend into an intimate atmosphere. The four tracks of this EP, including Mother Is the Milky Way and Illumination, extend the duo's sonic explorations while placing greater emphasis on melodies and the unique softness of Trish Keenan's voice, a few years before her passing in 2011.
