Boris Vian 1920-1959. Born in Ville-d'Avray, Poet, singer, musician, writer, artistic director, engineer, journalist, songwriter, playwright, novelist, musician, actor... named first-class butcher by the College of Pataphysics… He lived a happy childhood in the family estate, then a reversal of fortune forced the Vian family to move into increasingly modest apartments (cf "Les Bâtisseurs d'empire). At the Condorcet high school in Paris, Boris Vian plays the trumpet, becomes passionate about jazz (cf. "En avant la zizique", 1958) and collaborates with the magazine Jazzhot. He entered the Ecole Centrale in 1939 and became an engineer. He met Michelle Léglise whom he married in 1941 and Jacques Loustalot (the Major in Vercoquin) In 1946, he collaborated with "Temps modernes", published "J'irai cracher sur vos tombes" under the pseudonym Vernon Sullivan which caused a scandal due to its provocative eroticism, "L'Ecume des jours" which remains his most read novel, the only one to have a narrative and pathetic structure, influenced like "L'automne à Pékin" (1946) by Queneau and Ionesco whom he met at the College of Pataphysics. He became the trumpeter and host of a famous club in Saint-Germain des Prés: "Le Tabou" and published "Et on tuera tous les affreux" (1948) inspired, like "J'irai cracher sur vos tombes", by American noir fiction. In 1954, Boris Vian remarried Ursula Kubler. He wrote most of the poems that are in "L'Arrache-cœur" (1953) and in "Je voudrais pas crever" (post.1962). During tours in the provinces, he sings, notably "Le Déserteur" which is banned; he writes musicals; acts in various films. He created two operas: "Le Chevalier de neige" music by Georges Delerue (1957); "Fiesta", music by Darius Milhaud (1959). Following a pulmonary edema, he died at the age of thirty-nine. Unknown during his lifetime, Boris Vian has been read and admired by youth and an increasingly large and international audience since the 1960s.
