Blood Sucking Maniacs, the band from the Allen family, led by patriarch Terry Allen and matriarch Jo Harvey Allen, spans five generations and 121 years, and includes (among others) their sons Bukka and Bale Allen; their grandsons Kru, Sled, and Calder Allen; the founding members of the Panhandle Mystery Band, Charlie Sexton, Lloyd Maines, and Richard Bowden, as well as their regular collaborator Will Sexton. The unrestrained and varied songs gathered on their self-titled album are diverse and complex, blending heartbreaking ballads and knowing winks, oscillating between the sublime and overt sentimentality. The unifying principle here is not so much the harmonious ties of blood as the entropy of blood. Let yourself be carried away.
