Black Mountain, an offshoot of the Vancouver-based Black Mountain Army artistic collective, delivered in 2005, with their self-titled debut album, a work exploring the complexity and ambiguity of the world through a psychedelic and grounded rock. This record, compared to a makeshift space probe transmitting profane messages, draws its roots from the classic rock of Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd's Animals period, Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and Can. Lead songwriter Stephen McBean deploys a bluesy voice reminiscent of Neil Young and Mick Jagger, while his duo with Amber Webber evokes the chemistry of Richard and Linda Thompson or Meat Loaf and Ellen Foley. Between protest song, pop-culture commentary, and rock with deep grooves, the album alternates between enchanting ballads and striking tracks.
