Metalhorse is Billy Nomates’ third studio album, following 2023’s acclaimed CACTI and her 2020 self-titled debut. It explores blues, folk, and piano arrangements that give the stark punk sound of Billy Nomates, the project of Bristol-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Tor Maries, a more pastoral direction. Produced by James Trevascus and recorded at Paco Loco in Seville, Spain, Metalhorse is the first Billy Nomates album to be made in a studio with a full band. It’s a conceptual album that revolves around the imagery of a dilapidated fairground, representing the tumult of life—risk and pleasure, danger and exhilaration. Metalhorse is a balance of extremes. Confronting loss, material insecurity, and trying to stay true to oneself amidst increasingly unpredictable global chaos, the scales could easily have tipped towards darkness, but the more trials Tor Maries had to overcome, the more precious those small moments of happiness became.
