The debut album from Billy Nomates, now available on standard black vinyl!
Billy Nomates, the fierce, funny, and frank force of nature from
Melton Mowbray, now flying between Bournemouth and Bristol,
has arrived to shake the walls. The songs on her debut
album all come from a place of protest. Rebellion against
Brexit. Against dead-end jobs and zero-hour contracts. Against
gender inequality, sexual harassment, and
festivals where mandatory female acts are hidden in the
fine print. Billy's songs capture the same grim
reality that her beloved website Scarfolk highlighted
and that she explored so abrasively in the fringe theatre
where she finds solace. Musically, there are
hints of Nick Cave's growling sprechgesang, the "madness of musicians
like Captain Beefheart," the feverish post-punk of Sleaford Mods,
the groovy lo-fi art-rock of Sonic Youth, and the brassy Americana of Emmylou
Harris. What dominates, however, is a sense of liberation.
