Rolling and stumbling in his own way, guitarist Bill MacKay discovers a territory that is uniquely his: Locust Land, his new album on Drag City. New horizons open up for him: Bill adds to his mastery of other instruments, sings a bit more, and as a devoted and tireless collaborator, calls on other musicians (Sam Wagster, Mikel Patrick Avery, and Janet Beveridge Bean). Whether played solo or with companions, Bill's music projects the strength of the universal collective. In the arrangements, there is a departure from previous works - in addition to the brilliant guitar work for which he is known, Bill plays a variety of keyboards, from piano to organ to synthesizer, expanding his music with the available voicings while enriching the sound field without abandoning the brevity that characterizes him. For fans of his singing, and in the vein of Fountain Fire and his collaboration with Nathan Bowles, Locust Land expresses itself with an increased vocal presence - and a stronger commitment, with Bill's words and melodies bringing us closer together.
