Hailing from Chicago, guitarist, composer, and improviser Bill MacKay can undoubtedly be described as a 'genius' as he has invigorated the experimental folk-rock scene with his polyglot approach to guitar that combines Appalachian folk, blues, gospel, jazz, rock, and country-western. On Esker, the third album in his discography, MacKay, who plays all the instruments, delves deeper into genre hybridization by incorporating elements of rock-folk, psychedelic, and experimental modes. Side A features Moorish melodies and pure folk-rock sounds, while Side B is used to explore more abstract and undulating landscapes and capture their essence. Like the cover art created by musician Marc Riordan, MacKay and his instrumental mastery manage to place the listener in a state of contemplation of the world around them while conveying feelings of harmony and serenity.
