Antonio Pappano conducts the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome in two works from the earlier phase of Richard Strauss's career: a comparative rarity, the mercurial and virtuosic Burleske for piano and orchestra, with Bertrand Chamayou as soloist, and the autobiographical epic poem Ein Heldenleben, one of the composer's orchestral masterpieces. "Strauss always thought in a dramatic way," says Pappano. "To record this music in Italy, the connection must be made through opera, with all its theatricality, its temperament, its contrast, and its color... there needs to be a certain charisma in the sound that these performers achieve."
