Vinyl re-release + bonus: A compilation of their two previous EPs and the single Tras, EP C / B EP propelled Battles into the limelight. On stage, Battles was literally dominated by the excellent drummer John Stanier (Helmet). Accompanied by Ian Williams, Dave Konopka, and Tyondai Braxton – the latter having since left the band – the quartet delivers the product of their musical digestion: math-rock reinventing electronica and post-rock (which is often said to have gone out of style before it was even in style). Distorted voices, repetitive percussion, powerful crescendos, interwoven loops, jerky harmonies, everything transforms into a syncopated rhythm in a superb sonic alchemy. Listening to tracks like "TRAS 3", "IPT2", or "HI/LO", one puts aside preconceptions about math-rock, and describing it as fluid no longer seems like a contradictio in adjecto.
