Formed in New York in 2002, BATTLES weaves together disparate strands of hardcore, avant-garde sonic minimalism, neoclassical, techno and post-rock, with drummer John Stanier (Helmet), guitarists Ian Williams (Don Caballero) and Dave Konopka (Lynx), and Tyondai Braxton. After a series of EPs, the band signed to WARP and released their debut album MIRRORED in 2007. The album’s success was immediate and profound. In the winter of 2009, the band settled into the studio to begin working on the follow-up. Braxton then realized he would not be able to commit to the tour planned after the release of the second album, and left the band. With Braxton gone, they began the thankless process of deconstruction. The three remaining members realized there was a natural space on certain tracks to invite singers. And only a band as endlessly curious as BATTLES could have brought together such a variety of vocalists. Appearing on the album are English dark synth-pop pioneer Gary Numan, Chilean Matias Aguayo, minimal techno producer on Kompakt, cult indie rocker Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, and Yamantaka Eye, the messianic frontman of the Japanese avant-garde group Boredoms.
