Description

The multimedia work utp_ by the late Japanese composer and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the greatest names in contemporary music, and artist Carsten Nicolai aka Alva Noto was created in 2007 for the 400th anniversary of the city of Mannheim. Its world premiere was given by the Ensemble Modern at the National Theatre of Mannheim and combined images, acoustic sounds, electronics, and improvisation. For the performance, the music was accompanied by a visual score projecting amorphous structures generated by computer and resulting from complex mathematical progressions of colors. The work, whose title is derived from the word "utopia," consists of slow-paced tableaux of stretched octaves and skeletal patterns. Originally released on a cd+dvd box set, the cd included a 75-minute stereo concert version of the work, while the dvd included a video of the performance and a 40-minute making-of with interviews with the artists and musicians.
