What News is the 12th solo album by Scottish folk artist Alasdair Roberts, and the 4th to focus solely on the performance of traditional songs. For this first release in this vein since 2010, he drew inspiration from Scottish singers Jeannie Robertson, Lizzie Higgins, Duncan Williamson, Elizabeth Stewart, and Sheila Stewart. To allow himself to focus on the singing, he asked David McGuinness to play the pieces on keyboards. McGuinness sought out vintage pianos at the University of Glasgow: a grand pianoforte from 1844 and a fortepiano in the style of Mozart. He also added his own 1920 Dulcitone. A third dimension was added to the project with the arrival of sound engineer Amble Skuse, who structured the sound through electronic treatments. The trio offers us a true musical delight by giving new colors to traditional songs.
