On June 9, 2023, Capitane Records will reissue Friends of Mine by Adam Green on the occasion of the album’s 20th anniversary. For fans of Green and his band “The Moldy Peaches,” it may be hard to believe that twenty years have passed since the early 2000s, when the indie rock world was set ablaze by a new generation of artists, performers, and songwriters. The results range from straight-up rock and roll to punk with a songwriting consciousness, inspired by folk. It was following the success of his band The Moldy Peaches (which signed with The Strokes on Rough Trade Records in 2001 and then toured with them) that Adam Green wrote and recorded “Friends of Mine,” the landmark album that would give a new direction to his career. Moving away from the 8-track analog sound recorded at home on his previous albums, Green embraced what then seemed like a high-fidelity sound, with a full band, crooner vocals, and a string section (with arrangements by Jane Scarpantoni). “Friends of Mine” draws inspiration from the works of Serge Gainsbourg, Scott Walker and Frank Sinatra, while its lyrical content seems derived from the symbolist poetry and surrealism of Brecht and Dylan. Songs like "Jessica" would become anthems for a new generation of young indie rock fans, both in the United States and in Europe.
