Punk / hardcore: from manifesto to artefact, vinyl as the ultimate banner
Why punk and vinyl are inseparable
Punk owes a great deal to vinyl: in the 1970s, pressing a 7-inch was far cheaper than a traditional studio production, allowing hundreds of bands to broadcast their rage with no middlemen. This DIY culture forged a deeply physical relationship with the record, photocopied sleeves, handmade etchings, limited runs, that still fuels collectors’ passion today. Finally, vinyl’s analogue sound faithfully reproduces the guitar saturation and breakneck urgency that define punk and hardcore, where digital formats can sometimes strip away that essential grit.
From the Sex Pistols to Turnstile: cult labels and landmark albums to hunt down
The punk pantheon begins with the Ramones (Ramones, 1976), the Sex Pistols (Never Mind the Bollocks, 1977), and The Clash (London Calling, 1979), before Black Flag founded hardcore with Damaged (1981) on SST Records. Minor Threat and Dischord Records established the straight edge ethos with Out of Step (1983), while Bad Religion, NOFX, and Rancid popularised 90s skate punk on Epitaph and Fat Wreck Chords, even as Refused deconstructed the genre with The Shape of Punk to Come (1998). On the French side, Bérurier Noir, Métal Urbain, and Tagada Jones bear witness to a vibrant and politically charged scene. To track down an original SST pressing, an anniversary reissue, or a coloured Epitaph vinyl, a price comparator like Vinyles.com gives you a bird’s-eye view of the offers available across partner retailers.
