Prog Rock

Prog Rock, or progressive rock, emerged in the late 60s, driven by a new ambition: to push the boundaries of traditional rock songs. Here, the tracks lengthen, structures become complex, and musicians explore sounds from jazz, classical, or electronic music.

Founding bands like Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson defined the genre with essential concept albums. In the 70s, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull brought prog rock to its peak, offering immersive works where each vinyl tells a complete story.

Today, the movement continues with bands like Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, who perpetuate the spirit of experimentation. These vinyl records offer an immersion into a rich and abundant sound universe, where listening becomes a total experience, balancing instrumental virtuosity and psychedelic journeys.

Progressive Rock Vinyl: '70s Prog Classics and Modern Prog LPs

Why prog rock vinyl makes sense

Progressive rock vinyl just fits. Prog grew out of the late '60s treating the album as a complete work: side-long suites, concepts that run from start to finish, and gatefold sleeves designed like paintings, from Roger Dean's covers for Yes to Hipgnosis for Pink Floyd. Hearing "Close to the Edge" or "Thick as a Brick" on LP means hearing them split exactly the way the band intended.

This page brings together the prog rock records listed on Vinyles.com, from the British pioneers to today's bands. For each one, you can compare offers from several partner stores, whether you want a standard reissue, a 180-gram pressing, a double LP or a box set.

Prog pressings: originals, remixes and labels to follow

The big '70s albums were pressed in large numbers, so a clean vintage copy is usually within reach, apart from sought-after first pressings. With recent reissues, the key question is which mix you are getting: many classics now exist in new stereo remixes by Steven Wilson, who has reworked catalogs such as King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Yes from the original multitrack tapes. Some listeners prefer that clearer sound, others the original mix, so read the product description carefully.

For modern prog, Kscope has released Steven Wilson's early solo albums, Anathema, The Pineapple Thief and Lunatic Soul, and reissued Porcupine Tree, while Inside Out Music covers prog and prog metal. Both labels put out limited editions that tend to sell out fast.

Essential progressive rock albums on vinyl

Start with King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" (1969). Then come Yes' "Close to the Edge" (1972), Genesis' "Foxtrot" (1972) and "Selling England by the Pound" (1973), Jethro Tull's "Thick as a Brick" (1972) and Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon" (1973). The Canterbury scene added a jazzier flavor through Caravan and Soft Machine, while Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman released "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (1973). Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Camel and Van der Graaf Generator complete the '70s picture.

Modern prog found a new audience with Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" (2002), then with Steven Wilson's solo work, Anathema, Gazpacho and The Pineapple Thief.

Keeping up with prog reissues and new releases

Prog collecting runs on anniversary box sets, often packed with remixes, alternate takes and unreleased material, and on single-album 180-gram reissues. Current bands usually release each album in several versions: black vinyl, color variants, deluxe sets with a book. The artist links above gather each band's records, and comparing prices across stores keeps you from paying over the odds for a limited edition.
