New Hip Hop Vinyl Records: Rap Releases, Reissues and Limited Runs

What's in the new rap vinyl section

New hip hop vinyl records on this page fall into three groups. First, recent albums, from J. Cole to French rappers like Josman, Tiakola, Demi Portion and Furax Barbarossa, which is a good way to discover a scene that's huge across the French-speaking world and still under the radar in the US. Second, reissues of classics, especially golden-age East Coast names like Redman, Organized Confusion, Buckshot and Large Professor. Third, releases from today's independent scene, often in small runs. Vinyl has a special place in hip hop: it's the format of the DJs and samples the genre was built on.

Reissues and limited editions: what to check

Anniversary reissues are common in rap, and some classics exist in several versions. Nas's "Illmatic" (1994) has been reissued many times, for example. Before buying, make sure the edition is official and see what it includes, especially with deluxe versions that add bonus material or split an album across more discs.

French rap has its own reissue wave. Many albums from the 1990s and 2000s originally came out mostly on CD, and some are now getting vinyl pressings, sometimes for the first time. MC Solaar's "Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo" (1991), an early landmark of the scene, is a good example of a classic that has returned on LP. These runs are often limited.

How to keep up with new rap records

Albums drop on Fridays, but the vinyl for a big rap release often arrives later than the digital version, sometimes by several weeks. The independent scene works differently: labels like Griselda Records, Mello Music Group and Stones Throw regularly press their releases on vinyl, often in limited quantities and on pre-order. Record Store Day in the spring adds exclusive editions too. To catch everything, follow labels and producers as closely as the rappers themselves.

Comparing prices on hip hop vinyl

The price of a rap record varies by store, version and number of discs. On this page you can compare offers from several partner stores for each album, then click through to the one you want. For a widely available reissue, standard black vinyl is usually the best deal. For a limited indie pressing, act fast: once it's gone, it often costs more on the used market, and represses are never guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Why do rap vinyl records come out after the digital release?

Making a record takes time: cutting, pressing and printing jackets can add up to several months. Labels often release the album digitally first so they don't have to push back the date, then the vinyl follows. Pre-order listings usually show the expected ship date.

Which hip hop vinyl records should I start a collection with?

1990s classics are a good starting point because they're widely reissued at fair prices, with Nas's "Illmatic" as the best-known example. Add recent albums you enjoy from start to finish. Vinyl rewards listening to a whole album rather than single tracks.

Where can I compare prices on new rap vinyl?

Right here: each record on this page shows offers from several partner stores, so you can see who has it and at what price before clicking through. Prices often differ between standard and limited versions, so check which edition each offer covers.

How can I spot a bootleg rap record?

A bootleg often shows no identifiable label or licensing info, and the price may be suspiciously low. Sound quality is hit or miss, since some are cut from compressed files. Check the label, the barcode and the offer description before you buy.
