Hip Hop Vinyl Records: Classic American Rap Albums and Reissues

Why hip hop vinyl still matters

Hip hop vinyl is where the whole culture started. Hip hop was born in 1970s New York on turntables, with DJs like Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash cutting between the breaks of funk and soul records. Early rap hits such as the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" (1979) came out as 12-inch singles, and DJs kept working with vinyl long after the CD arrived.

This page gathers the American rap and hip hop records listed on Vinyles.com, from golden-age classics to current artists like McKinley Dixon, NxWorries, Knxwledge and Moor Mother. For every record, you can compare offers from several partner stores before clicking through to the one you pick.

Buying rap records: pressings, bootlegs and reissues

Many '90s rap albums run past 60 minutes, so they come as double LPs, which is better for cutting quality. Original pressings of some classics have become expensive on the used market, and hip hop is also flooded with unofficial pressings, often on colored vinyl, that pass themselves off as reissues. Check the label and catalog number before buying a copy that is much cheaper than the rest. Twelve-inch singles remain a genre specialty: they often include the instrumental and a cappella versions, which DJs rely on.

  • Double LP: standard for long albums
  • Explicit or clean version: the sleeve should say
  • Official pressing: label and catalog number match the discography
  • 12-inch singles: instrumentals and a cappellas for DJs

Essential American rap albums on vinyl

The '80s laid the groundwork with Run-DMC, Eric B. & Rakim and Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" (1988). The '90s are the most collected era: A Tribe Called Quest's "The Low End Theory" (1991), Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" (1992), Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" (1993), Snoop Dogg's "Doggystyle" (1993), Nas' "Illmatic" (1994), The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Ready to Die" (1994) and OutKast's "Aquemini" (1998).

Labels like Def Jam, Death Row, Rawkus and Stones Throw each defined an era, and Stones Throw remains a benchmark for independent rap on vinyl. More recently, Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" (2015) has become a modern classic.
