Tshegue feels an urgent need to write and declaim, a compulsion to act before thinking, something visceral, like some people's relationship with the sacred. This is, incidentally, one of the themes of the duo's latest album. Sung in Lingala, composed of percussion and produced with punk and rock influences, Tshegue's music reflects its hybrid nature more than ever on this third EP: a direct descendant of ancestral sounds, it is contemporary and documented, fueled by political, artistic, and personal questions. It doesn't reveal all its secrets at once but is heard like watching a crowd dance: you'll inevitably find yourself in it.
In 2017, their union caused a boom: their first EP Survivor, a mix of rock, blues, electro, funk, and African beats sung in Lingala, garnered interest from an audience as vast as their genre blend. Described as "intense incantations" by Le Monde and "exciting fusion" by Libération, Tshegue's music was immediately programmed everywhere: from Afropunk to Solidays, including the Musée de l'histoire de l'immigration, Trans Musicales, Jazz à la Villette, We Love Green, Dour, Red Bull Music Festival... After releasing a second EP, Telema, in 2019, the duo paused – to observe, confront, and cherish. They questioned the current state of youth – and humanity in general – and, without knowing it, began to outline the themes that would populate their future lyrics. Faty, a member of the group, wrote a first track, Mais, which, in line with previous topics, questions relationships with colonization, capitalism, and religion (and enlisted Ib Kamara, the stylist and artistic and image director of Off-White, to direct the music video). The six other tracks – clearly very accomplished – evoke notions of heritage and success, racism, ostracism within oppressed communities, the antagonism between tradition and modernity, and the uprooting of immigrants...
