Eyeroll is the musical panacea from Ziúr, an experimental producer/musician from the Berlin scene, a dye that awakens us from our creative slumber and encourages external connection and reflection. It is a polyphonic spell that demands human interaction, and the carefully selected collaborators – Elvin Brandhi, Abdullah Miniawy, Iceboy Violet, Juliana Huxtable, Ledef, and James Ginzburg – each bring distinct voices that together herald a bewildering sonic era. Ziúr's palette had to evolve to match the scale of the project, but it was necessity that determined the tone of the album. Primarily recording at night, Ziúr was aware of the noise she was making and thus developed a unique method for recording organic percussion. Using a set of rototoms – tunable drums – she scrapes, rubs, and gently taps on the skins to build the undulating and unstable rhythmic backdrop of each track. With Eyeroll, Ziúr delivers a firm statement on solidarity, humanity, and the renewal of hope when everything seems lost. By bringing together such a wide yet philosophically harmonious team of collaborators, she has created a work that speaks to the creative fringe in unequivocal terms. She may have spent her entire career avoiding the solipsistic traps of "queer art," but by assembling a common statement that challenges so many normative assumptions about music, politics, and beyond, Ziúr has achieved her most curious album to date.
