In 2010, four girls from Eastern Europe decided to form a band. It could have been a small project, just for their local scene. But ten years later, with three albums under their belt and hundreds of concerts across Europe, the band has found the keys to challenging more traditional institutions (Europavox, Eurosonic, Tallinn Music Week, etc.), reminding them of the most valuable things the underground can produce. Žen delivers unadorned post-rock and bittersweet pop, carried by voices so distinctive to us "Western" listeners, all in Croatian. This first album is packed with the great ideas typical of a band's early days: well-inspired riffs, perfectly formulated build-ups, well-measured effects, etc. And thus, it remains just as relevant in 2021.
