Released by Crammed in 1991, Zap Mama's debut album became a true classic and influenced many singers and artists around the world. Founded, conceived, and led by Marie Daulne, Zap Mama originally included five young women who, inspired by their mixed African/European backgrounds and the cosmopolitan environment of their city, Brussels, created a delightful a cappella repertoire that draws from Congolese pop, Arabic or South African melodies, Afro-Cuban 'human beat box', Pygmy polyphonies, along with touches of gospel and Spanish medieval music. Zap Mama/Adventures in Afropea became one of the best-sellers in the label's history. It received a Grammy Award nomination and topped the world charts in the USA. Zap Mama recorded and released a second album with Crammed in 1994. Marie Daulne then continued the journey solo, recording six albums while pursuing her transcultural path, always committed to building bridges between Europe, America, and postcolonial Africa.
