Merging hard bop and oriental sounds, multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef managed to create his own genre within the jazz sphere. 'Eastern Sounds' was released in 1962 and continued his exploration of Middle Eastern music with pianists Barry Harris, Ernie Farrow (double bass), and drummer Rex Humphries.
On tenor saxophone, flute, oboe, and xun, a traditional Chinese flute, Yusef Lateef brings a touch of mysticism and spirituality to a series of original compositions and covers of great Hollywood themes.
