Nothing Under Heaven is the third album by Yulyseus, a Scottish multi-instrumentalist specializing in ambient and drone. It follows In the Dark Palaces of Both Our Hearts (2022), an introspective and immersive work nourished by travel, uprooting, and the exploration of unknown environments. While the latter explored darker, more introspective territories, Nothing Under Heaven opens onto vaster and more expansive soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from years spent between Glasgow, Berlin, Mexico, and Valencia, Niall Gahagan composes here pieces of great patience and gentle luminosity, built from electronic layers, bowed strings, and subtle field recordings. Rather than seeking spectacular effects, the album unfolds slowly, allowing atmosphere and emotion to emerge gradually. Evolving within a dense and ever-changing ambient landscape, Yulyseus continues to prioritize texture, depth, and gradual movement. Through eight carefully crafted tracks, Nothing Under Heaven explores sound's capacity for both stillness and movement, inviting attentive listening rather than mere background music. The opening track, Veillands, sets the tone with a contained intensity that gently invites the listener into introspection.
