Piano concertos

Description

She records this time with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under the direction of Lionel Bringuier, the complete orchestral works of Ravel, including the two piano concertos composed between 1929 and 1931. These two works share the influence of jazz and the music of Gershwin, which Ravel discovered during his tour in the United States in 1928, yet they could not be more different from each other. The Concerto in G, playful, has a Mozartian clarity and references in the style of Saint-Saëns, like Fauré's Ballade opus 19 that Yuja Wang chose to complete the program. In contrast, the Concerto for the Left Hand, commissioned by the pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm during the Great War, is a dark and enigmatic work. "Ravel knew he was a good orchestrator, his two piano concertos are thus fundamental in his work, and consequently in our recording project and in our repertoire in Zürich. And I could not imagine a better partner than Yuja in this adventure." (Lionel Bringuier)
