« You are in a Kitchen Filled with Plants as the Sun Streams Inwards » is the debut album from the experimental jazz collective You, Me, + the Whales Sextet, based in Los Angeles. The group is co-led by brothers Zac Burgenbauch (guitar) and Devin Burgenbauch (bass), and includes David Otis (saxophones), Elif Dinçer (harp/electronics), M. A. Harms (vibraphone/percussion), and Lucas Lenny (drums). Blending American primitive guitar textures with spiritual jazz, free improvisation, field recordings, microtonal drones, and a profusion of bells, the ensemble oscillates between an Alice Coltrane-like delicacy and the frenetic improvisation of the Cecil Taylor Unit. Otis glides gently amid Lenny's fluid rhythms and Devin's swiftness, while Harms and Dinçer move in small sonic touches around Zac's melancholic folk melodies, inspired by John Fahey. The result transports listeners into a textured dreamscape, imbued with kinetic energy and beauty.
