Released in June 1981, seven months after the murder of John Lennon, the album is an unfiltered plunge into love, loss, anger and fear. Ranked among the 200 best albums of the 1980s by Pitchfork, it is Ono's most personal and radical work — a kind of primal scream, as she would later confide to Newsweek. Its cover, a photograph of Lennon's bloodstained glasses as they were returned to her by the hospital, caused a scandal. Ono refused to change it. "This is what John is now." In the years that followed, Season of Glass has only grown in everyone's esteem. Now recognized as a major artistic testament to grief and loss, it remains a devastating and cathartic listen.
