Don't believe that "Oiseau rare" is an album "with strings," one of those where you hear a jazzman nestle a little too cozily in a silky setting concocted by some Hollywood-inspired arranger. Let's say instead that "Oiseau rare" is an album featuring a violin, a viola, and a cello, which is entirely different. A string trio, you might ask? If you like, but above all, three full-fledged voices, fully integrated into the ensemble they form alongside the trumpet, piano, and double bass. In composing this repertoire, Yoann Loustalot does not seem to have been intimidated by the overwhelming prestige of the classical tradition associated with these instruments: a novice in writing 'for strings,' the trumpeter managed to turn this weakness into a strength, finding in this unusual and undoubtedly slightly uncomfortable exercise an opportunity to take risks, and thereby the path to an expression of absolute sincerity. Alone at his table in the early hours of the morning, he allowed himself to be guided by the inspiration of the moment, in a process sometimes close to automatic writing, revealing intimate and perhaps sometimes unconscious musical layers: the sweetness of a jazz ballad and the rage of a tango, echoes of impressionism and minimalism, melodies with a hint of Nino Rota... One rule only: the refusal of any digression. Whether it unfolds in a long sequence shot or in the manner of a fleeting miniature, the music says nothing but the essential, refusing any decorative embroidery, any superfluous embellishment, but also any form of modesty. This is because emotion is never kept at a distance here, nor is it staged or overplayed: it is simply there. Listen to it! In 2022, Yoann will play in the French tour "Free" with the legendary Iggy Pop.
