Mount Matsu

YIN YIN, the Dutch quartet from Maastricht, returns with a sonically expansive third album, Mount Matsu. Recorded collectively in their own studio in the Belgian countryside, the album is a kaleidoscope of sounds and influences, occupying a no man's land between Khruangbin and Kraftwerk, surf music and Southeast Asian psychedelia, Stax soul and 80s mutant disco, city pop and Japanese instrumental folk (sokyoku). Their predominantly instrumental songs, always deeply rooted in Southeast Asian psychedelia and 60s and 70s funk, are sometimes enhanced by soft vocal harmonies, adding even more depth to their soulful expression. Mount Matsu marks a shift from the sometimes more Moroder-esque production style, based on drum machines and synthesizers, of their second album, towards a more organic aesthetic reminiscent of 70s live bands. Mount Matsu is their most mature and adventurous album to date. An infectious pentatonic melodicism that invites multiple listens.
