Yemen Blues, founded by the very charismatic singer Ravid Kahalani, fuses Yemeni influence with North African rhythms, jazz, funk, and rock. Their new album is a tribute to the poetry of the great rabbi of Yemen in the 17th century, Shalom Shabazi.
Shalom Shabazi, one of the most important poets and Kabbalists in Judaism, wrote over 850 poems during his lifetime. After conducting extensive research on the sacred songs of Shabazi, Ravid and his team selected a number of the lesser-known poems and composed music to accompany them. The new compositions are influenced by the melodies of the prayers of ancient Yemeni Jews. The result has a very contemporary and energetic sound while respecting the original poetry.
