This compilation brings together eight tracks by Yassine Nana and his group, recorded between 1984 and 1989, at a pivotal period in Mauritanian musical history. A central figure from one of the country's most respected families, Yassine is rooted in a deeply established tradition while taking part in a major transformation of forms and sounds.In Mauritania, and later during stays in Paris and Rabat, the group integrated Saharan structures with the tools and aesthetics of their era: drum machines, synthesizers, electric guitars, and arrangements influenced by reggae, soul, or new wave. These tracks bear witness to a Mauritanian scene in motion, attentive to international musical flows yet firmly attached to its languages, modes, and themes: love, travel, exile, and music itself.Long kept on cassette and rarely distributed outside the country, these songs tell another story of African music in the 1980s, seen from Nouakchott. A rare repertoire, both popular and experimental, documenting a Mauritanian musical modernity still largely unknown today.
