Al Jamilat

Description

With her first solo album Ya Nass (2013), Yasmine Hamdan presented her personal and modern vision of pop in Arabic. In Al Jamilat ("the beautiful ones," feminine), she continues her musical exploration, while also examining the Arab world and the changes taking place within it. While Yasmine's vocal style is clearly linked to the traditions of Arabic music, the structures and arrangements of the songs incorporate elements from contemporary electronic, folk, and pop music. Yasmine Hamdan produced this album in collaboration with British producers Luke Smith (Foals, Depeche Mode, Lily Allen) and Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Carl Barât, Regina Spektor), and with New York musicians such as Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, John Zorn, Marc Ribot) and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth). Yasmine is a nomad. It is therefore not surprising that the creation of this album took the form of a journey, during which she collected and blended sounds and ideas, interacted with the many people she met along the way (musicians or not), which nourished her reflection and enriched the socio-political dimension that always underlies her lyrics. The release of the album Ya Nass generated much enthusiasm across Europe and North America, as well as in the Maghreb and the Middle East (where Yasmine Hamdan has enjoyed an almost iconic status since her early days with the duo Soapkills). She has performed in prestigious venues on four continents, including concerts related to the release of Jim Jarmusch's film Only Lovers Left Alive (in which she sings).
