Brooklyn's Xenia Rubinos offers us this disconcerting debut album. From the opening, the synths are sharp, the rhythms off-kilter, the voice strained, and the 12 tracks on *Magic Trix* — created by Xenia and her drummer/arranger Marco Buccelli — evoke the free spirit and best moments of Rip Rig + Panic, DNA, and The Contortions. Rubinos draws on her Cuban-American and Puerto Rican heritage, playfully knocking things about (interrupting recording due to pictures falling off the walls!). A dozen evocative, savagely danceable tracks ("Help," "Los Mangopaunos," "Cafe Con Leche," "Aurora De Mayo"...).
